About This Challenge

We are currently looking for a new record holder! The minimum to beat is 15!

Challenge Rules

  • Standard, commerically-available, wooden hexagonal pencils are to be used for this attempt.
  • At the start of the attempt, all pencils should be laid flat on a table, not touching one another or your hands.
  • Once the attempt starts, you have one minute to stack as many pencils as possible, one at a time, horizontally.
  • Pencils must be stacked one on top of the each other, one at a time. The formation can be of any design, however, you can ONLY have ONE pencil on top of the next. This means that only one pencil touches another pencil at any single instance to count.
  • No other formation of pencils is allowed other than the one listed above. Only one pencil that starts at the base, the next level is ONE pencil, and the next is ONE pencil, and the next ONE, and the next ONE, etc.
  • You may use both hands during your attempt.
  • No adhesives, wire, water, or any other supporting aid may be used during this attempt.
  • Once the pencils have been stacked, they must stay so without falling for 5 seconds for the attempt to be valid.

I dont understand what is stacking.. some people just build a wall of pencils. which is really hard, while others build something like a house, which is much easier... which one should i try.. I also heard that we can only hold 1 pencil at a time... is that true?

How is the tower supposed to be constructed. All the videos submitted are using 2 pencils per layer but there is no specification in the description. In the matchstick tower this is the description. "The matchsticks should be stacked one by one into a tower, with each level consisting of two matches placed parallel to one another, at right-angles to the matches on the previous level. You must only pick up one matchstick at a time." does this rule apply to this challenge?
